Excerpt from “Tail Wags and Whiskers…”

“…Although Rocky interacted with me and the boys fine, he ignored Randy. And, I mean, he acted completely indifferent to my husband. Whereas our other cats had always been up for one of Randy’s pats or games, Rocky darted away if Randy tried to touch him. Even worse, a few times Randy came into our bedroom when the cat was lying on the comforter and Rocky scrambled off like a German Shepherd was on his tail, zooming breathlessly under our bed. Randy had had felines all his life. He loved them and they loved him. He wasn’t used to being snubbed, or even feared, and his feelings soon became hurt. “What’s with this cat?”

‘Give him time,” I answered trying to sound hopeful. “He’ll come around. He’s just shy.”

To my dismay, after several months, I saw no change in kitty’s attitude to Randy. If anything, it got worse. If he saw Randy coming toward him, he’d skitter away, paws scrambling on the floor, like he was being chased by a herd of wildebeests. God forbid, if Randy wore new shoes: the cat went into a complete meltdown, streaking by in a frenzy, desperate for refuge. We all wondered, why new shoes? Was it the sound they made? The smell of leather? Whatever the case, the cat ran away from Randy and disappeared for hours.

“I’ve never had a cat like this,” Randy said in exasperation one day, once again trying to bond with Rocky. I wondered if someone tall like Randy had once abused Rocky in his early days.

All I could do was hope that time would change things…”
