I think there’s a special place in heaven for certain humans. Sometimes it’s easy not to notice what they do or take their gifts for granted. But more and more, when I see them, I want to say thank you.

The hard-working people who bring us things – Amazon, groceries, FedEx trucks, UPS. We have untold people coming to our house to deliver food, goods, and medicine. In all weather. This past winter, my heart broke for an Amazon driver struggling his way up our snowy, icy front walkway, carrying a heavy box. Finally, I knocked on the window to signal, just leave it there. Go back to your warm truck. It was a small thing to do, but he seemed relieved. I watched him drive off and my heart went out to all people with that tough job.

The animal rescuers– I must be on some “tear-jerking” algorithm on social media. So much of my feed involves puppies rescued from burning buildings, ducklings falling down sewer grates, or tortoises stuck upside down at the ocean shore. I love watching how people will stop and pitch in to help. Many times, strangers will come together to solve the problem. Recently, I saw folks cutting off tangled netting wrapped tightly around a seal’s neck. At the end, they all waved and returned to their lives. It’s a reminder that angels walk among us.

The funny people – They come up with the perfect meme or video. Even in these tense, tough times, they find the humor. They help us get perspective and see how ridiculous it all can all be. Sometimes even reading the comments can lead to laughs. Unfortunately, many I can’t repeat—especially the political kind—but trust me, they tickle the funny bone. It’s reassuring to see how many insightful, witty people are out there. I’m grateful.

The kind people – The other day, I saw a video of a thin, young boy, about ten, walking the streets of India. He held this big, heavy platter of cookies. He spent all day, every day, trying to sell these cookies, often one at a time. In the video, a man approached and bought all his wares and encouraged the boy to go home and rest. The child cried with relief. I often see videos of strangers giving needy people money to buy groceries. The person usually ends up giving a grateful hug to the donor. Thank God for the kind people. They make me want to be kinder.

The husbands who edit their wife’s blog – Yes, had to sneak that one in. Believe it or not, I know several female bloggers who say their husbands are a big help with their writing. I couldn’t live without Randy going over mine. Maybe it makes sense. A love of words (and snappy dialogue) brought him and me together over four decades ago. I look to him now to sometimes iron out my syntax or say what I’m struggling to say in a better way. God bless editor husbands. (Editor’s note: it’s a labor of love!)

Of course, there are many more examples of people on the fast-track to heaven, but these came to mind. What unsung heroes do you most admire?

All of the above, plus the people who make me well (the medical and 1st responder types, and my children)

Pennie, Oh yes, first responders especially are amazing. In fact, all medical people are my heroes.

Randy Braren recommended your blog. He’s right, you
Are a terrific writer! (But I secretly believe it’s because he saw his name in your blog!🙄)

Dave! So great to hear from you. Randy’s very kind and supportive. Did you go to the last reunion at Redding Road House? If so, sad I missed you there.

Depending on my mood, I can feel teary if a cashier is a nice to me, such are our tricky times. And you are right, I am so grateful for the kindness that – I am convinced – dwells in most people. Two nights ago, Stephen Colbert donated over 2 million dollars (through merch auctioned during his final on-air days) to Chef Andres’s World Central Kitchen. Two people doing what they can to feed people. Lifted my heart!

Lea, Wow, that was a beautiful gesture of Colbert’s. Such a contrast to this horrible regime in power.

Love this appreciation piece. And confession: My someone reads every piece I write before it goes live. In fact, I blame my writing for how we met. We went to high school together and somehow connected on Facebook. He was reading my stuff way before we started hanging out.

Mona, I find that romantic. I love to hear men are reading my posts. I always assume it’s mostly women.
